Little Dragon is an electronic music band, based in Gothenburg, Sweden. It consists of Swedish-Japanese singer Yukimi Nagano (vocals, percussion) and her close high-school friends Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrik Källgren Wallin (bass), and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards). The first Little Dragon's release was a double A-side 7’’ single ‘Twice’/’Test’, released on Off The Wall label in 2006. The following year, the band signed with the larger British indie Peacefrog Records and released their debut self-titled album Little Dragon on September 3, 2007.[1] Since then they have been touring through Europe and also have made music videos for the songs "Test", "Twice", "Constant Surprises", "After the Rain" and "Fortune". It was hard not to be impressed by his recent Finders Keepers mix, and we can safely say that if you were taken by it's intuitively ruff cut but studied techniques you'll be all over this one. Tracks range from minute long sketches of rerouted samples as on the two intro tracks, to club cut big beats on 'Anything Worse', I have seen and met him a couple of times at the grandstar jazz club even filmed his sets witch are on youtube and he has always been humble. Joining the musical lineage of Minnesota expatriates, and representing a new generation in progressive sound, is the infinitely talented Sarah White. Cultivating a base of followers and nurturing her sound from the ground up in her native Minneapolis, Sarah embarks on the next phase of her creativity with her pilgrimage to Brooklyn, NY. The success that has followed her to her new home in New York’s most eclectic borough is a culmination of experience and preparation for a golden opportunity. The path that led to this exodus is the stuff dreams are made of. Sarah White has always been artistically inclined. As a youth she explored the worlds of theater and dance, and would become a student of music, learning to play instruments early on. Sarah’s organic progression toward vocalism would begin in middle school, experimenting with spoken word poetry and rapping by the age of 14. Her collaborative abilities would be put to the test in 2002 when she joined the regional hip-hop outfit, Traditional Methods, as an emcee. Covering political and social topics in the tradition of such groups as the Fugees and Digable Planets, the group had a successful run, until Sarah decided to expand her creativity, starting a new group called Black Blondie in 2005, with fellow vocalist Samarha Linton. Black Blondie would fuse hip-hop, electro-dub, and soul, providing glimpses into Sarah’s current identity. The girl-heavy band would earn strong regional acclaim, as well as a Minnesota Music Award nod. Throughout her group efforts, Sarah drew lofty comparisons to contemporaries and legends such as India Arie, Lauryn Hill, and Sade. While Sarah embraced all of the local acclaim, she sought to further broaden her horizons, and is currently in the early stages of a burgeoning solo career. Sarah White’s voice can be described as hypnotic at times, with breathy, soothing soliloquies, and deep, seductive stanzas. What’s impressive is her ability to effortlessly transform from singer to emcee, as in the introspective song, C Train. In this selection, she combines a spitfire flow, with dancehall style chatting and soulful melody, to create her own unique “scatois”. Since hooking up in 2001, The Tones, who consist of rapper/singer Suhn and rapper/producer Retro, have finally released a full-length project on Plug Label. Prescribed for fans of Soul Village, Kanye, and Little Brother, the album is laced with soulful tracks and positive yet versatile flow, as they seek to take audiences on a journey through what they refer to as “DreamTalk”.

Although there are a few hooks on the album that sound like repetitive refrains that could contain more thought, there does exist a good selection of sample influenced and catchy choruses. Not to mention that The Tones’ flow is versatile no matter the subject, along with Retro’s quality production which can be described as Primo/Dilla influenced without sounding too “copycatish.”
After getting this album i was not sold on it at first until i played it a couple of times and then it came to me that this is a well done album.So i suggest you listen to the tracks first before you buy. peace

Val Watson

This multi-faceted artist is no newcomer to the game. Val's spicy vocal licks were first heard when she served as the female vocalist for Club Nouveau with producer Jay King, singer Samuelle, and writer/producers Denzil Foster & Thomas McElroy (who later produced En Vogue)--all when she was still attending prestigious Stanford University. After writing for and recording three albums with that West Coast neofunk outfit, the group was dropped and Val moved from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, where she continued to create new music, sing backup, and look for new opportunities. By chance she met visionary music producer Gerald McCauley, who has worked with the likes of George Benson, Chante Moore, Bobby Lyle and many others. McCauley hired Val for various projects doing session work and recording demos. After noting her professionalism, versatility and lyrical prowess, he immediately committed to crafting her solo project with her.

Naledge and Double-0 met in 2000 during a talent show at the University of Pennsylvania. [1]. They began recording songs, making demos, and performing at local shows. That eventually led to Double-0 and Naledge forming a partnership that spawned Kidz In The Hall. Double-0 eventually made a solid connection with industry heavyweight Just Blaze. He quickly aligned himself with the project and committed to overseeing "School Was My Hustle", as well as executive producing Naledge's solo project. “Kidz In The Hall are a breath of fresh air in this tired rap world we're living in right now.” After business meetings and continued musical growth, Naledge and Double-0, signed a group deal with Rawkus Records, and released their debut album School Was My Hustle in 2006. Kidz In The Hall are looking to become one of hip-hop's most admired acts, destined to leave a legacy of artistic brilliance. Double-0 the DJ and Naledge the MC are reviving a format established as the set standard in early-'90s hip-hop, and with their debut release, "School Was My Hustle". In November of 2007, Kidz in the Hall were officially signed to Duck Down Records, an independent label started by founding members of the Boot Camp Clik. "Sketches Of A Man" is ultimately what I am and where I am in 2008," Dwele explains. "It is inspired by life and love, and it is about finding out how I fit into these different musical genres, or how I would fit into these new cultures. Like, if I spoke French, how would it sound? . . I think that's what inspiration is."

The album finds Dwele writing, producing, arranging and playing all instruments on nearly all of the tracks on the project. One of the few exceptions is "A Few Reasons," a bouncy groove with a hip hop feel written and performed by Dwele with production from Nottz (Snoop and R. Kelly’s "That’s That"). Dwele shows us his hip hop side on the album with tracks like " Body Rock," and funky ballads like "Open Your Eyes," (a Bobby Caldwell cover), and "Love Ultra," but doesn’t stray too far from the soulful roots that we love on tracks like "Vain." On "Vain" Dwele speaks of how difficult it is to hold on to a relationship. "With my music I try to touch on things that everyone can relate to. Things like, being a musician and trying to find the balance between work and love,"

Wayne "Frosty Freeze" Frost, a hip-hop pioneer whose acrobatic performance with the legendary Rock Steady Crew in the 1983 movie "Flashdance" helped set off a worldwide breakdancing (B-BOYING!) craze, has died. He was 44.

Wayne "Frosty Freeze" Frost died Thursday at Mount Sinai Medical Center after a long illness, said Jorge "Fabel" Pabon, a senior vice president of the crew where Frost and other so-called b-boys (for beat or break boys) made their name performing complicated and daring dance routines.

"He was one of most charismatic b-boys that ever lived," said Benson Lee, director of the new documentary film "Planet B-Boy"...

Wayne "Frosty Freeze" Frost was known for his energetic style, intricate choreography and fearless moves including back flips and head spins. One was even dubbed the "Suicide."

Frosty Freeze got his start in 1978 with the Bronx-based Rock City Crew. In 1981, he became part of the legendary (hey you the) Rock Steady Crew, joining such acclaimed breakdancers [B-BOYS!] as Ken Swift and Crazy Legs.

In the early '80s, a group called Funky Four Plus One surfaced as one of the first hip-hop groups to include a female emcee surrounded by a group of guys. Nearly three decades later, the same thing happens at N.C. State: This time, they call themselves Kooley High, a crew with three emcees—Tab-One and Charlie Smarts (both of Inflowential) with Rapsody (the "Plus One")—and two producers—Foolery and The Sinopsis. With this debut, Kooley High sounds less like a hip-hop contrivance with a stately objective and more like a few hip-hop fans who decided to get together one night, goof-off and rap to some beats. Thing is, they can actually make good songs.
Summer Sessions has no real direction, but it's not supposed to. On tracks like "We Be That," "Back Home" and "I Wanna," Kooley High's production team decorates the song with utility snares, stringing together the emcees' sportive anecdotes about life, love and fun, hardly acknowledging that such a thing barely exists in today's pissing-contest hip hop. The meanest moment of the EP lands when 9th Wonder produces "Water" and brings along fellow Justus League member Edgar Allen Floe (pun intended?). Rapsody and Charlie Smarts are at their finest here, capturing the devilish nature of 9th's drums with their words and ultimately matching a behemoth final verse by E.A. Floe.

I'm always moaning that, as much as I appreciate the promotional music sent through to me by companies, so many of the promos are not my thing that I quickly lose faith in checking it out.

Well, it'll teach me to pay more attention to what I get sent as I've had this Black Spade album sitting in my In Tray (otherwise known as my coffee table) for a few weeks now. After picking it up and flicking through I wasn't quite sure what to make of it and left it for another listen. That could have been the end of it but for an appreciation thread on Soulstrut which made me dig this out again and, what do you know, this is actually a damn fine listen from end to end.

Taking care of production and mic duties, Black Spade's album is very much a one man affair but works hard to avoid repetition in sound or subject matter. Flitting between singing and rapping Spade's production style seems based in underground rap while his mcing maintains a level of bravado more akin to mainstream style. Production wise I'm hearing an undeniable Dilla influence with the heavy muffled drums and off kilter loops but there's no doubting that Spade is bringing his own take on production to the table. Tale of 32 showcases Spade's more straightforward rap side with a great flowing beat and a bassline that simmers below before occasionally bubbling up over the beats as Spade delivers a smooth undulating rhymeflow on top.

When I saw a song titled Her Perfume She Wore my first thought was of Herbie's I Thought It Was You and I was delighted to find out that this name check was intentional. Black Spade uses the slightest of references with the chorus hook and a couple of chord changes that pay tribute to the funk disco classic. This track falls into the group of songs where Spade showcases his singing talents and is something I heartily support. There's no denying the man can rap but I'm really feeling his singing voice over these type of beats. Hot stuff.

So who exactly is this guy? An underground sensation by the name of Jay Electronica, who, as evidenced by the foreword on The Pledge, has made friends with some of the right people in Hip Hop. Romantically he’s linked to Erykah Badu (who has quite the penchant for attracting some of Hip Hop’s more creative gentlemen), and is close personal friends with Just Blaze. How special is he? Special enough that he can have the first six and a half minutes of this sixteen minute project reserved for his friends to just gush about him. And gush they do. Just Blaze calls him, alluding to and dismissing the cliché with all seriousness, a “brother from another mother,” while Erykah accurately describes him as a mythical otherworldly being who would “carry a bow and arrow on his back.” Not much else is known or published about Jay (try Googling him, there’s one article), but he comes from New Orleans and spent some time being homeless. Contrary to his geographical roots, the sound of the project sounds nothing like the traditional Southern sound.

Already receiving weighty club rotation and airplay in urban Afghanistan and downtown Beirut, Santogold is the first act of the century to boast a post-war following on the International Space Station Mir. Following a live performance broadcast from three thousand miles off the Cape of Good Hope last June, inmates at Leavenworth Penitentiary received Santogold with a celebratory confetti parade. Just another first for the modern super group that knows no bound.

Composed of absolutely no members, Santogold is also the first musical outfit capable of claiming the planet’s broiling collective consciousness as their front woman. Longtime collaborator, singer and songwriter Santi White says of her work with Santogold, “We began trying to write pop songs to sell, which made us depressed, so we started writing songs for ourselves instead.” The results of that self centered conceit is the songwriting work heard for the first time on the full length Santogold album, as yet untitled, to be released in 2007 on the Lizard King label.

As unmastered tracks leaked over the internet this past November, the request lines of radio stations from Miami to Hanoi began freezing with a flood of calls from listeners eager to hear the new Santogold sound over their frequencies. From his radio show in the United Arab Emirates capital city of Abu Dhabi, Michael Jackson (the King of Pop) played what Santogold snippets he had been able to pirate from a bootleg MySpace page dedicated to the group. Days later, BBC Radio One reported that the unreleased Santogold debut was heard blasting from the iPod shuffle of Libyan ruler Moammar Qaddafi as he entered an international summit in the Nigerian capital of Abuja. Recognizing the urgent need to address the uproarious buzz, Santogold released the following statement through their label reps at Lizard King: “The response to our unmastered songs has been both premature and phenomenal! We were happy to hear that the children of Darfur have found hope in our melodic interpretation of life on the battlefield of love! We’re hoping that each and every 20-something from downtown San Francisco to central Mumbai will also learn something from our work! And to the people dropping no-knock fire on old ladies in Atlanta: shame on you! Santogold ain’t with that shit!”

The trajectory of such early successes leading to newfound political clout is nothing new for Santogold, whose debut album, though half a century in the making, is sure to rock glass pipes from the Lincoln Memorial to Buckingham palace. The flavor of the gold is guaranteed: Santogold!

Around 1994, the late, great DJ Rob One took Dusk under his wing, showed him around underground L.A., and introduced him into the Afrika Bambaataa-founded Universal Zulu Nation (which Dusk would help to revive 10 years later). In 1996, Dusk met Tackett, and the pair formed a trio with T-Love for a quick series of shows. Shortly after that, Dusk became the DJ for Lady Copper and Medusa's "Nappy at the Roots," still a monthly event, every second Friday at Fais Do-Do.

By 1997, Tackett and Loslito had asked Dusk to join the Root Down, which over the last decade has been a vital incubator for a brilliant movement, hosting or nurturing such stellar West Coast hip-hop acts as J-5, Dilated Peoples, Black Eyed Peas, the Visionaries, Crown City Rockers, Breakestra, and the Rebirth. Dusk's personality and brilliant timing made him the club's heart and soul as he effortlessly mixed hip-hop, funk, house, reggae, cumbia, and the unexpected.

"Very few DJs have Dusk's full spectrum of musical knowledge," says Loslito. "He knew how to keep people dancing and still take chances." That shows on Dusk's two internationally praised mix-CDs, Top Ranking Volume 1 (a tribute to Jamaican roots, dub, and dancehall) and the salsa-filled La Musica, meticulous productions loaded with rare global party-rockers shaped into carefully crafted musical journeys.

Around L.A., Dusk "was always in the mix," says Z-Trip. "He was a diehard ... lugging crates, digging, making the party live." Dusk maintained an iron-man schedule of mixing around town several days a week, and, in addition to the Root Down and Nappy at the Roots, he was a resident at numerous other clubs. In a sadly ironic twist, his brilliant tribute mix to recently passed rapper/producer J Dilla aired on KCRW and BBC Radio a few weeks before Dusk's own demise.

He was expanding beyond his beloved L.A., performing at Root Down New York City, with hip-hop soul DJ Sake 1 in the Bay Area, and at the Sundance Film Festival, along with high-profile shows on the rooftop of L.A.'s downtown Standard, at the El Rey with Z-Trip, and in the pavilion at the Getty.

Dusk's fingerprints were even on his own memorials: Events in New York City, San Francisco, and L.A. (which included appearances by Bambaataa and hip-hop pioneer Kool Herc) were organized by the DJ's latest venture, Prima Lux. This trio of Dusk and partners Andrew Lojero and Pablo Like Picasso had over the last year been throwing roving parties and after-hours rooftop affairs that just got bigger and bigger. Indeed, Dusk himself had masterminded these three events, two months before his death, intending them as hip-hop history lessons. "Even his tribute party was about teaching and educating," says Kooyman.

More than 500 people attended his funeral service, at Rose Hills in Whittier, among them members of J-5, the Beat Junkies, the Visionaries, and Dilated Peoples. Sixty white doves were released from his plot high on a hilltop and disappeared into the eastern sky - reminding those assembled of the bright light he shone on countless lives.

"Dusk was always about family," says Loslito. "When Jurassic 5, Breakestra, Rebirth, Cut Chemist, or any local homey would travel the world, Dusk would always say, 'Go handle it and let the world know about L.A. I'll be here, holding L.A. down.' He's now world famous because he held L.A. down so strong."

Los Angeles, CA – The By Youth For Youth (BYFY) group of Mar Vista Family Center (MVFC) will be hosting its 2nd Annual Sights and Sounds of DJ Dusk Art and Music Festival on Sunday April 27th, 2008.

The event will take place from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Mar Vista Family Center, 5075 South Slauson Avenue Del Rey, CA 90230

Last April, in its inaugural year, the Sights and Sounds of DJ Dusk Festival celebrated the life of long-time Mar Vista Family Center employee and youth leader, Tarek "DJ Dusk" Captan. On April 29, 2006, Tarek tragically lost his life and his absence has been felt citywide, especially at Mar Vista Family Center. Through art and music, Tarek was able to reach wide audiences across the Los Angeles landscape and beyond.

During his ten years of service here at Mar Vista, he was able to empower youth with the tools to seek higher education and social justice

This celebration, and each one thereafter, will combine Tarek's passion for music and art with his devotion to youth activism by exposing aspiring artists to veteran performers who believe in using art and music to create positive social change. With a new youth center under construction, MVFC will be able to serve three times the amount of current youth.

Aside from offering leadership workshops and building communication skills, the new youth center will provide programs in the creative arts, such as dance, music, deejaying, art, video, and photography; an accomplishment Tarek would appreciate

Since the festival coincides with the much anticipated creative arts programs, the celebration is being utilized to establish a foundation for these programs by raising funds for materials, equipment, software, etc..., and accepting monetary and/or equipment donations

Featured artists include DJ's Expo, Sake 1 (SF), Daz, Jeremy Sole, Lady Sha, Music Man Miles; live performances by Ray Ricky Rivera, and Raquel Rodriguez; keynote speaker Garth Trinidad (Chocolate City, KCRW) and graciously hosted by Azul 213.

There will be many more dj's, artists, and attractions such as a DJ workshop in addition to a youth and veteran art exhibit

The Mar Vista Family Center is a nationally recognized program that creates positive changes through dozens of community programs including By Youth For Youth which promotes individual and social responsibility among youth. The BYFY program provides positive role models and important leadership development tools for 65 underprivileged youths, ranging in age from 13 to 21.

These youths, in turn, supervise enriching activities for 600 children and preteens who attend programs at MVFC year-round

After visiting San Francisco on their honeymoon and falling in love with the city, DJs Jody and Michael McFadin went home to Southern California, sold most of their possessions, and moved to SF with a fuzzy dream of starting a record company. While continuing to dream about starting a label, they invested the last of their savings into a business that would combine their passion for music and provide an income to live on, and opened the Groove Merchant record store on Haight Street in early 1990.

Within a year the small shop had built a reputation the world over as a place to find rare records and learn about new sounds. A haven for collectors, DJs, and producers looking for soul jazz, musical obscurities, and break beats, the Groove Merchant even earned a toast on the Beastie Boys song "Professor Booty", "This one goes out to my man the Groove Merchant, comin' through with the beats that I've been searchin'," rapped Mike D. on 1992's "Check Your Head" album.

With start-up capital of one thousand dollars and little knowledge of the record business, the Luv n' Haight record label (named after the Sly and The Family Stone song) was launched. In 1993 the company incorporated as Ubiquity Recordings and has since grown into a company with several imprints (Luv n' Haight remains the home for re-issue of rare groove gems, CuBop is the Latin jazz arm, and Ubiquity releases new music ranging from hip-hop to singer-songwriters to cutting edge club music), a worldwide distribution network, and over 100 releases. Incidentally, the name Ubiquity was chosen because of the label's mission to make unheard music ubiquitous.

She soon charted territory singing backup for Usher, Eric Benet, Me'Shell NdegeOcello, Ginuwine, Brandy, and spending more than a year on the road with Whitney Houston.[1] Among it all, Smith made appearances in GAP advertisements, as well as being a regular fixture behind Vonda Shepard on the FOX television show Ally McBeal.

Smith later signed a solo recording contract with Hollywood Records and lead off with the single[2] and music video[3] "Gladly" in late 1999. Another single "Good N'Strong" followed in 2000. Her debut album Psykosoul garnered early critical acclaim,[4] but never saw an official release and was ultimately shelved. Only her cover of Edie Brickell's "What I Am" received an official release with its inclusion on the television soundtrack album of the animated series The PJs.[5] The album was eventually re-issued independently with bonus tracks and remixes in 2005 as Psykosoul Plus.[6]
Between releases, Sy served as sometime lead singer for British funk outfit Brand New Heavies on their album We Won't Stop.[7] She continued to write, produce, arrange, and sing background for other artists. Smith duetted with soul legend Al Green on the theme song to the Showtime series Soul Food.[8] She also made an appearance on the solo debut of Ali Shaheed Muhammad's Shaheedullah and Stereotypes album in 2004.
Smith emerged with her independent debut The Syberspace Social in 2005, which featured contributions from gravelly-voiced vocalist Anthony Hamilton[9] and famed neo-soul stalwart producers such as James Poyser (of Jill Scott fame) and Victor Duplaix. The album has since been reissued as an expanded special edition.
Most recently, Sy Smith, along with Sharlotte Gibson and Kenya Hathaway, daughter of Donny Hathaway, have been highly visible as featured background singers on American Idol. Smith also appeared on The Article 3, a 2006 EP release from bass guitar impresario Me'Shell NdegeOcello in addition to opening for the artist. Sy Smith released her first live DVD Sy Smith Live: Worship At The Temple, recorded live at Temple Bar in Santa Monica, CA.

So let me first start off by saying about ten years ago or so I was teaching these two
artists/DJ's the fundamentals of graff and DJing. When this name came into conversation! "Lee, you got to meet my, cousin you are both from the UK and have the same collection of music". I was like someday....so about two years ago we hooked up at his studio (the dub cove) where we connected strait away, each amazed with each other's music.....So the journey continued....Rylo(Sebadukes Records) has his own sound with a mix of all types of music with a dub feel. His last album "Linoleum Lineage: Omanjamari & DJ Rylo" is a timeless voyage thru the city of angels and beyond.......It's been a pleasure working and learning with him...And for everyone out there go cop a copy of his album and check out his podcasts sure to re-fresh your senses.........
